I'm not big into putting politics on my blog. Usually, it's just about my family to keep my friends and family up to date with our crazy city life. But since this issue affects my family I'm putting in a plug for protecting marriage. This is a private blog so my thoughts are really to just my family and friends. My intent is not to offend but to share my thoughts on what I feel is an extremely important and sensitive issue.
As many of you know, this November California residents are going to vote on whether or not to amend the state's constitution. The ballot will state the following with a yes or no vote option.
"Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California."
I recently read this article by columnist Dennis Prager regarding the proposition and thought it was right on. (It was written in May, just after the California Supreme Court judges voted 4-3 to allow same-sex marriages in California.) I also liked the message from this article written for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
As a mother of soon-to-be 2 children (yes, I've passed the 3-months-left mark) I am definitely looking out for their future. I'm not naive - I know homosexuality is out there and out in force, especially in this beautiful city in which I live - I just don't want my children to be taught IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL that marriage between a man and woman is the same thing as between a man and a man or a woman and a woman. I want religious adoption agencies to be free to continue to place children in homes with both a mother and a father without being sued for discrimination because they don't allow same-sex couples adopt children. (It's already happened to a Catholic Adoption Agency in Massachusetts.) I was lucky enough to have a loving mother and father raise me and I have a firm belief that children in general do best when they have the same type of traditional family up-bringing. I want Sarah to be free to dream of marrying Prince Charming and William to hope for a princess - and not pressured for it to be the other way around.
I love my friends who live an alternative life style. They are great people who do much for society. By supporting traditional marriage I am not diminishing them in any way nor am I taking away their civil rights.
I've joined the ProtectMarriage.com Coalition to support Proposition 8. For those not living in California (and for those who are) and want to donate, you can do so on their website. And for my California neighbors who feel the same way I do, please vote in November and encourage your friends to do the same!
We had this vote a few years back in Nevada and they worded the question tricky but the LDS church and a couple other churches put up billboards and signs letting people know which way would protect marriage in the constitution of Nevada. It was hardly a contest in the end with all the hard work people put in and the more liberal part of the state was in an uproar that Clark County was a hot bed of sin but only certain sins were allowed. I'm very okay with that, they can pay my tax on food and fix my roads but they won't be telling my kids what is okay in an intimate relationship!
ReplyDeleteAmen. I'm with you all the way on this one. I just wish we were still in CA to vote on it!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Hillary! That was beautifully stated and I agree completely.
ReplyDeleteAmen! Ive heard if it gets passed our church won't have the authority to marry because we won't do same sex marriages...oh man! I hope people get out there and vote!
